Welcome to the Great Hospital

The Great Hospital, founded in 1249, has a remarkable history of care for a period of over 760 years and is located in one of the most important and historic areas of the City. The Great Hospital is the only surviving medieval hospital with both its documentary and architectural archive intact. So important is the medieval archive, it has recently been included in the UNESCO UK Memory of the World Register.

The Great Hospital site includes a total of 15 listed buildings including six grade I, one Grade II* and eight Grade II structures. Originally, established to care for retired clergy and other poor people,  the hospital has expanded and developed over the centuries.

Our heritage information room, The Lodge, is open from April to September, 10am to 12 noon every Friday.

The Great Hospital’s scheme of charity requires us to preserve the fabric of the historic buildings and to care for older people in need who are or have been resident (or worked) in Norwich. A range of modern apartments have been provided and currently residents are accommodated in either sheltered/supported housing, housing with extra care facilities.
