Funding for the work of the Great Hospital
comes primarily from two sources -
- Income from endowments made to the Great Hospital during
its long history
- Weekly Maintenance Contributions paid by residents towards
their accommodation
The Trustees have to carefully balance the finances of the Great
Hospital to meet the costs of maintaining and preserving a complex
of medieval buildings. Recent expenditure includes:
- £650,000 - Central and West end of the original church building
(1992)
- £750,000 - East Window of original church building (2003)
- £100,000 - Derlyngton Tower
Grants
English Heritage has made grants towards some of this work. In
order to qualify for EH grants the Great Hospital has been required
to raise matching funding much of which has come from donations
from charitable trusts. We are particularly grateful to:
Charles Littlewood Hill Trust
Garfield Weston Foundation
Headley Trust
The Mercers' Company
Paul Bassham Charitable Trust
The Pilgrim Trust
all of whom have made donations of £10,000 and above.
Legacies
Competing with the cost of maintaining the historic buildings
is the ever increasing cost of providing housing and care services
appropriate to residents' needs. Upgrading of accommodation is
an on-going process, as is staff training to ensure that our staff
are equipped to provide the best possible care.
We are extremely grateful to the many individuals who have left
legacies to the Great Hospital to assist us in continuing to offer
support to the older citizens of the city of Norwich.
